What will you learn during PADI Rescue Diving Course?

The training consists of two parts: theoretical and practical.

Theoretical part

The main topics discussed in the theoretical part are:

  • The psychology of rescue
How to behave in sudden accidents and emergency diving situations. Why the action of “stop, think, act” is so important to effectively deal with a diving accident. Why solving diving problems begins with understanding the behaviours that may be their cause or effect. These topics will be discussed comprehensively in order for you, a future rescue diver to have more understanding and to be able act calm whilst providing assistance in the event of an emergency.

  • Predicting and preventing diving accidents
Discussion in the causes of emergency diving situations resulting from inadequate preparation or maintenance of equipment, psychological aspects and the environment in which we will be diving.

  • First aid for diving injuries
Introduction to the types of diving injuries that can occur and first aid measures appropriate to them. In particular, injuries caused by underwater creatures and injuries related to the effects of the underwater environment on the human body (decompression sickness, pressure injuries).

  • Emergency assistance plan for the location where the course is being held
This is a written document in which a rescue action plan is prepared, containing all important information (e.g. telephone numbers, location of first aid equipment, address of the nearest hyperbaric chamber) required to act in an emergency.

Practical part

The practical part consists of 10 rescue exercises and 2 scenarios.

Before starting the exercises, you’ll have to master self rescue skills: cramp release, establishing positive buoyancy at the surface, controlling the airway, using an alternative air source, overcoming vertigo and reestablishing sense of direction.

Rescue exercises:

  • Tired diver

  • Panicked diver

  • Response from shore, boat or dock (responsive diver)

  • Distressed diver underwater

  • Missing diver

  • Surfacing the unresponsive diver

  • Unresponsive diver at the surface

  • Exiting the unresponsive diver

  • First aid for pressure-related injuries and oxygen administration

  • Response from shore/boat to unresponsive (nonbreathing) diver at the surface

Rescue scenarios are a simulation of a diving accident. By combining elements of previously practiced skills, the rescue diver carries out the entire rescue operation from the moment it occurs to the arrival of rescue services. The course covers two scenarios:

  • Unresponsive diver underwater
The scenario begins when a diver is reported missing. The search site must be identified, then a search operation must be organised, the diver must be found, and lastly the diver must be brought to the surface.

  • Unresponsive diver on the surface
There is an unresponsive and non-breathing diver on the surface. Assess the situation, tow the injured person to shore or a boat whilst giving rescue breaths and removing equipment, exit the water, and perform CPR
