PADI Open Water Diver Course

Introduction to an amazing underwater world.

The PADI Open Water Course is an introductory diving course. After completing it, you will receive a diving certificate, which will give you the qualification to dive in the open water (lakes, rivers, seas and oceans) to a maximum depth of 18 meters / 60 feet with a buddy.

  • Prerequisites before starting the course:

    – Be at least 10 years old (for kids aged 10 and 11 the maximum depth is 12 meters / 40 feet)

What will you learn during PADI Open Water Diving Course?

PADI Open Water training consists of two parts: theoretical and practical (diving).

Theoretical part

Contains five sections covering the following topics:

  • Being a Diver – the laws of physics that govern the underwater world, their influence on the diver and the five senses during the dive

  • Equipment – basic diving equipment, rules for its use and maintenance

  • Your Skills as a Diver – theoretical description of basic diving skills that are practiced in the practical part of the course

  • Problem Management – introduction to underwater safety and emergency procedures

  • Using Dive Computers and Tables – Information on planning dives using dive computers and RDP (Recreational Dive Planner) tables

Theoretical part is done using PADI eLearning platform. It takes around 8 to 10 hours to complete.

Practical part

The practical part is divided into two modules. The first one is practicing skills in confined water (pool) over 5 sessions. The second module is 4 open water (ocean) dives, during which you’ll practice skills learned in the pool.

Some of the skills that you’ll have to master during the practical part:

  • Clearing a flooded mask (half flooded and completely flooded)

  • Recovering and clearing regulator

  • Communication underwater

  • Five point descent and ascent from the dive

  • Using a Buoyancy Control Device – BCD

  • Taking off and putting on diving gear – on the surface and underwater

  • Removing and putting on a mask underwater and breathing without a mask underwater

  • Emergency procedures: Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA), alternate air source ascent

  • Basics of underwater navigation using a compass

  • Dive planning
